A New Model: What Confidence, Beauty, and Power Really Look Like

by ashley graham

I love Ashley Graham. She's an incredible role model to women of all ages. She promotes mental body positivity  AND a healthy, balanced lifestyle, which to me is just perfect. She's all about developing a love for yourself and prioritising your own wellbeing. She does not conform to the social and industry norms and pressures regarding body image. Finally!

I can't even image how many women she has inspired and empowered all around the world. Ashley you are the dream - thank you! Here are my top quotes / passages from her book which I read whilst in my bikini on the beach.

"This is the generation of body diversity. We are sick of being told by society, by the fashion industry, by Hollywood, that we are too thin, too fat, too flabby, too tall, too small."

"Although I’m a model and make a living off my looks, my mom always reminded me of all of her inherited values—the first being that looks don’t matter. They certainly don’t make me more important than anyone else. Mom often said to me, “I know if you look good, you get special treatment.” And then she went a step further: “I don’t care what the world says or does. You have to remember that every person is valuable.”"

"Vulnerability isn’t a sin, and everyone is entitled to his or her feelings. But I’m here to tell you that although I didn’t start out liking my cellulite or stretch marks (and I don’t always appreciate them to this day), I faked it until eventually it felt real. It’s just like when you put yourself down so often you begin to internalize the criticisms–if you act like you’re amazing, you begin to believe it."

"My practice in charming my teachers at school was good training for modeling. This was an evolving process, but I made it my mission to become friends with my agents. I made sure they knew me in and out, so when they called clients about me, they were not only excited to pitch me but also had real specifics on why I would be good for that particular brand."

"Don’t fall into the trap of sacrificing your self-esteem for affection and acceptance. No matter what your size, you are a sexy goddess. Remember that."

*

" “Just look as thin as possible going into this casting,” I was told over and over, “because they like smaller girls.” This isn’t just a message given to plus-size models like myself; it’s one every woman is hit over the head with all the time."

"You know how powerful it can be when you discover that you can do something you never thought you could? It changes everything . . . and gets you thinking about what else you can do that you weren’t aware of."

"The biggest misconception is that the purpose of going to the gym is to change your body. We should be working out to be healthy. The idea of physical transformation can be so defeating for some women, because it is subjective (not to mention that people are overly critical when they look in the mirror). Even if your body doesn’t “change” in the course of a year, it doesn’t matter: your fitness level will."

"No matter how beautiful—or not—one is perceived to be, the true beauty we all possess is found on the inside. That should be our focus and the measure by which we are judged. How do we move through life? What other lives have we touched? Who have we confronted with love? How have we changed the world for the better? Those are all qualities that can’t be counted or weighed. Really, beauty beyond size."
